A sci-fi scene modelled and rendered in Blender and composited in Fusion. The concept appeared in my mind with no reference. Only after I started working on it did I realize it must be inspired by the Favela in Rio de Janeiro.
One common cliche with these types of scenes however is the desolate and oppressive atmosphere that always seems to be associated with poverty and dystopia. I opted to give it a more comfortable vibe, while still conveying hints of a story.
I started by modelling 4 or 5 buildings to use as duplicates in a particle system, then added randomized textures and lights to add further variety. I then added a photoscanned human courtesy of Ian Hubert. I finally topped it off with details such as ladders, string lights, a makeshift plywood path to travel on the rooftops, murals/graffiti, etc.
